| Chicago Blackhawks learning, adjusting to new rules, new style
When it comes to the play of Nikolai Khabibulin, all that matters to the Blackhawks is how their star goaltender performs starting Oct. 5 when the regular season begins. Khabibulin has allowed 9 goals in two preseason starts following Friday’s 5-4 loss to the St. Louis Blues at the United Center. At least 2 of the goals that escaped Khabibulin were either deflected or beat him through a screen. He still made 29 saves. |
| Yawney, Barnaby on same page: Steroid talk bogus Blackhawks coach Trent Yawney wasn't surprised about allegations that one-third of NHL players are taking performance-enhancing substances—and not because he agreed with the comments. "The NHL has been getting great reviews in terms of the hockey, and the lockout issues have been pretty much forgotten," Yawney said Friday as the Hawks prepared to play the Kings on Saturday night. "It was just inevitable that somebody would come up with something negative because that's how society is." Dick Pound, president of the World Anti-Doping Agency, made the charge when he said he told NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman the league had a problem with its substance-abuse policy, which calls for random testing. |
| Yawney doesn’t blame 1-goal losses on youth
There’s no way to put a positive spin on the Blackhawks’ miserable 12-26 record in 1-goal games. Or is there? Trent Yawney blamed two things for the poor record in 1-goal games, and one of them wasn’t the Hawks’ overall youth. The Hawks are 6-7 in overtime and 2-5 in shootouts. NHL blows it: The NHL has received a lot of positive publicity of late, in Sports Illustrated and The Hockey News, for how — from Toronto — it monitors every game played, in large part to make sure the correct calls are made on goals using video replay. |
| Blackhawks’ play ‘unacceptable’
It was another small crowd at the United Center on Friday night, but what many of them thought of the Blackhawks’ lethargic performance in a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild registered loud and clear with coach Denis Savard. On a night when the Hawks’ effort matched the zero on the scoreboard, the team was booed off the ice at the conclusion of its eighth straight loss. Not even Martin Havlat, the Hawks’ best player, escaped Savard’s wrath Friday. It was Havlat’s poor pass back into his own zone in the final minute of the first period that resulted in a goal for Marian Gaborik to snap a scoreless tie. Gaborik (2 goals) beat Boucher through the pads in alone with 25 seconds to play in the period after Havlat’s pass hopped over the stick of Hawks defenseman Cam Barker. |
