Walter Payton (1954-1999)
Those "SWEET" Memories
Fans remember Payton.
Walter Payton fought his battle with his Liver disease with the same amount of courage and dignity as he played the game.  If you would like to have your favorite memories of "Sweetness" posted in this tribute to the Greatest Running Back ever to play the game of football, please write to ChitownSportsDen@aol.com.. Limit your memories to 9 or 10 lines.  Thank You, and Thank You Walter Payton.

Jerry from AtlantaI wasn't a Chicago Bear Fan, but I truely had deep respect for Walter Payton.  He seemed to be such a humble man.  He never felt the need to be standing in the spotlight.  Many of today's athlete's should take notice.  He made himself into a GREAT football player through determination and burning desire.  What a role model he was, in a world that has so few of them.  Goodbye Walter.  My condolensces go out to his family, and all the fans of Chicago.  He will be missed, but NEVER forgotten.
Walter  Payton all through my life always personified undying effort and perserverance, and in the tough times of my life, (which we all have) i was always inspired by his will, dicipline, and drive , to hang in there, he was a tremendous inspiration to me and countless others, Scott
TO THE FAMILY OF SIMPLY THE GREATEST FOOTBALL PLAYER THAT I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF WATCHING THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.         DONNIE MORMAN AND FAMILY

I had the opportunity to see Walter Payton play in Soldier Field several times. He  was truly the greatest running back in NFL history.  He was also a wonderful person who did many  thoughtful things for many people. What a humanitarian. The world needs more people like Walter Payton. I will always be a Walter Payton fan. Michelle McDaniel
I have been unable to do this until now; Walter Payton's passing was a big blow and I still am heartbroken over it.  Did I know him?  Not personally.  He certainly never knew me.  However, he was one of those rare people who set such a shining example of how to live one's life that I could only wish to emulate him.  That's how he will live on... not only the greatest running back of all time but also one of the greatest people.  Thanks for this opportunity.  Michele L.     Hamden, CT
I grew up watching Walter Payton, and as a young boy, I believe that it was watching him that made me a die-hard Bear fan. I don't think I have ever been so sad to see someone that I never even met, pass away. I wish that I could have met this wonderful, and tremendously talented man, all I can do now is say thank you Walter, for being the best in football, in Bears history, and most of all in life. My sympathy goes to Walters family, your loss is truly felt by all.

Former Bear Players/Coaches reflect on Walter Payton
"The first thought I had was not of sadness, but of all the great things he did for the city of Chicago, for the Bears ...," he said. "He kept everybody loose, and that was one his rules."
.....Former Bears Coach Mike Ditka
"I think of the blocks he made," Moorehead said. "Walter was always willing to sacrifice on the field for the sake of the team. Ten guys would pile on top of him and he would be the first guy to get up."
.....Tight End  Emory Moorehead
"Come Sunday, he gained 125 yards," said Roland, now a running backs coach for the Arizona Cardinals. "I mean, that was the kind of guy he was."

Former Assistant Coach Johnny Roland
"I think it's the way he lived his whole life," . Just as in his football years, when no one really knew how really hurt he sometimes was, "No one knew how sick he was until the very end,"

.....QB Jim McMahon
"Payton was the greatest friend anybody could ever have, somebody who loved life, loved people - and there will never be another one like him."

Former Offensive Lineman Dan Jiggets
"He kind of downgraded his celebrity status.  It was no big deal to him. He was very common, never in his ivory tower or standoffish."

Former Bears LB Doug Buffone
